On December 10, 2012, James L. Shaw Jr., known affectionately to his loved ones as "Lil James," passed away in Indianapolis, Indiana. Born on May 18, 1989, in the same city to parents James L. Shaw and Geneva L. Corbin Shaw, he was 23 years old at the time of his death. James was a graduate of Arsenal Tech High School and had established himself as a hardworking young man, employed with FedEx and simultaneously running his own self-employed business in home renovations.
James was a Black
man who was deeply integrated into his community and family life. He began his working life early, assisting in the family business, Mobile Wash, before taking positions at UPS and Amazon warehouses, and later at C2 Supply Company. Beyond his professional endeavors, he was known for his mechanical skills, enjoying working on cars and serving as a handyman around the house. His personal interests included playing video games and he was remembered by those who knew him as a "jokester" with a lively spirit.
He maintained a close bond with his family, particularly his mother, and was a supportive presence at his brother Demetrius's football and basketball games. James was survived by his parents; his brother, Demetrius; and his sisters, Shandis and Jasmine. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Willie Mae Shaw, his great-grandmother, and a cousin. Services to honor his life were held on December 22, 2012, at Stuart Mortuary Chapel, followed by interment at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis. Publicly available reports from the time do not detail a criminal investigation, suspects, or arrests in connection with his passing.
