On the afternoon of March 5, 2024, a quiet neighborhood in Hendricks County was disturbed when a Honda sedan crashed into the back of a house. Inside the vehicle, authorities discovered the driver, 20-year-old Carlos Neri-Guzman of Indianapolis, who was the sole occupant. First responders soon realized it was not the crash that had claimed his life; the young Hispanic man had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to his torso and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The residents of the home were present during the impact but were unharmed. The incident, which initially appeared to be a tragic car accident, quickly turned into a homicide investigation.
Detectives and crime scene investigators worked through the night to piece together the events that led to Neri-Guzman's death. Their investigation led them to a nearby community pool parking lot, where they believe Neri-Guzman had arranged to meet with two individuals. It was there, according to evidence gathered by police including surveillance footage, that the fatal shot was fired. After being shot, Neri-Guzman drove away before losing control of his car and crashing into the residence on Memorial Knoll Drive. The investigation swiftly pointed to a suspect: a 15-year-old male from the nearby town of Brownsburg.
In the early morning hours of March 6, less than a day after the shooting, a Hendricks County Sheriff's Emergency Response Team executed a search warrant at a home on McClain Drive. The teenager, identified as Jeremy Allen Briscoe, was taken into custody. A search of the residence uncovered two firearms, one of which was a semi-automatic handgun with no serial number, commonly referred to as a 'ghost gun,' which investigators believe was the weapon used in the crime. Briscoe refused to speak with police following his arrest.
The Hendricks County Prosecutor's Office made the decision to charge Briscoe as an adult. He faced charges of murder, aggravated battery, and dangerous possession of a firearm. After a trial in December 2024, a jury found Jeremy Briscoe guilty of the murder of Carlos Neri-Guzman. On March 13, 2025, Briscoe, now 16, was sentenced to 45 years in prison for the killing. He was given nearly 500 days of credit for time already served in jail.
