On the afternoon of May 17, 2019, a violent disturbance erupted in a residential neighborhood on the west side of Indianapolis, Indiana. Around 1:00 p.m., peace was shattered in the area of South Whitcomb Avenue, near the intersection of West Washington Street and South Lyndhurst Drive. A resident, William Horner, was retrieving his trash can from the curb when he suddenly heard the rapid report of gunfire, estimating nearly a dozen shots were fired in close proximity. The burst of violence forced him to scramble for safety on his porch as the chaos unfolded next door.
When officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department arrived at the scene, they discovered a grim aftermath in the backyard of a home. DaVon Antwuan Davis, a 22-year-old Black male, was found suffering from fatal gunshot wounds. Despite the emergency response, he was pronounced dead at the scene, his life abruptly ended in the enclosure of the yard. In addition to DaVon, a second male victim had also been struck by the gunfire. This survivor, whose name was not released, managed to exit the house with visible injuries to his legs and sat waiting for law enforcement to arrive before being transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The investigation into the double shooting began immediately, with crime lab technicians processing the scene and recovering more than a dozen shell casings from the street. Detectives canvassed the neighborhood, seeking answers to why the two men, both in their 20s, had been targeted. At the time of the incident, police did not release any information regarding potential suspects or a motive for the attack. Public records and reports following the event have remained scarce regarding any subsequent arrests or charges filed in connection with DaVon's murder, leaving the case without a publicly documented resolution or conviction of a perpetrator. DaVon, known affectionately to friends and family as "D.A.," was remembered in his obituary as a young man who had attended local schools and had a passion for basketball.
