In a tragic turn of events stemming from a dispute over child visitation, 25-year-old Gerald Eugene Lewis III was fatally shot in an Indianapolis apartment on Sunday, February 26, 2023. The incident, which also left a 23-year-old woman critically injured, unfolded inside an apartment on Millview Court.
The violence was allegedly precipitated by a heated argument between the female victim and her child's father, 26-year-old Jailyn Hurt.
According to the woman's statement to the police, the feud began when Hurt refused to return their son to her due to a disagreement over visitation. The confrontation escalated, reportedly culminating in Hurt shooting the woman in the cheek and then fatally shooting Lewis, her current boyfriend, who was present in the apartment.
Following the shooting, law enforcement quickly identified Hurt as the suspect. He was initially arrested on drug-related charges before being accused of murder and attempted murder on the Tuesday following the incident. Hurt was subsequently booked into the Marion County Jail, where he was held without bond pending the filing of formal charges.
