In the fall of 2021, on the near southeast side of Indianapolis, the life of 47-year-old Martin Harold Griffin was brought to a violent and tragic end. On the evening of October 14th, officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched to a residence in the 2400 block of St. Paul Street following a report of a person shot. Upon their arrival, they discovered Griffin suffering from what appeared to be a shotgun blast.
He was rushed to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead. The Marion County Coroner's Office subsequently ruled his death a homicide, sparking an intensive investigation by IMPD homicide detectives.
The investigation into Griffin's death led detectives to a crucial piece of evidence within the very home where he was shot. A search warrant was executed, and a camera was recovered from the room of a man named Kyle Roberts. The footage from this camera, captured at the time of the murder, would prove to be damning. The video showed Roberts entering his room and retrieving a sub-compact machine gun. He was then heard in a heated argument with another person off-camera. Roberts returned to his room, exchanged the machine gun for a shotgun, and then a single, fatal gunshot was heard. The footage concluded with Roberts re-entering his room and stating that he had just shot Griffin.
Armed with this irrefutable evidence, Kyle Roberts was arrested and charged with the murder of Martin Griffin. In September 2023, after a two-day jury trial, Roberts was found guilty of Murder and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Serious Violent Felon. The motive for the killing was described as an escalation of a simple dispute. In November 2023, Kyle Roberts was sentenced to 75 years in the Indiana Department of Correction for his role in the senseless death of Martin Griffin, bringing a measure of justice to Griffin's loved ones.
