On a January morning in 2020, 21-year-old Chrishaun Snelling, a male, was at his mother's apartment in Indianapolis. He received a phone call from a female who asked him to come outside. He told his mother he would be right back and went to see what she wanted. Shortly after he walked down the stairs and opened the main door to the apartment building, his mother heard five gunshots. When she looked out her front door, she found her son on the ground.
Chrishaun Snelling was transported to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries on January 8, 2020.
As a witness was driving into the apartment complex, he observed a young man running from the area where the shooting had just occurred. The man was attempting to conceal a pistol inside of a red bag while trying to climb a fence into an adjacent apartment complex. The witness was able to see the man's face as he drove past. This eyewitness account would later prove crucial in the investigation that followed.
The investigation led police to Damarion Moore. In a photo array presented by detectives, the witness from the apartment complex identified Moore as the man he had seen fleeing the scene of the crime. Further investigation revealed a second victim connected to Moore. The day after Snelling's murder, Moore's girlfriend, Shaughnje Scott, was also found shot to death. While Scott lived near Snelling and the two were friends on Facebook, authorities could not establish any other direct link between the two killings.
Damarion Moore was subsequently arrested and charged with the murders of both Chrishaun Snelling and Shaughnje Scott. In January of 2023, a jury found Damarion Moore guilty of both murders. The following month, he was sentenced to serve 116 years in prison for the killings.
