In the cold of a late December evening in 2018, a young man's life was cut tragically short in a shooting on the far east side of Indianapolis. Twenty-three-year-old Christopher Buckhalter was found shot in the driver's seat of his car which had rolled to a stop after crashing into another vehicle at the Carriage House East apartments near the intersection of 42nd Street and Mitthoeffer Road.
Before succumbing to his injuries, Buckhalter was able to tell responding officers his name and date of birth. He had been working two security jobs and was reportedly preparing to go Christmas shopping with one of his sons.
The investigation into Buckhalter's death spanned several years. Initially, detectives had the names of some individuals they wanted to question and were aware of surveillance footage from the apartment complex. Despite these leads, the case went cold, and for a time, it seemed as though justice for Christopher and his family might remain elusive. His mother, Jacqueline Buckhalter, made public pleas for anyone with information to come forward, expressing her belief that people in the community knew who was responsible for her son's murder.
A breakthrough in the case finally came in August 2022, nearly four years after the fatal shooting. Prosecutors filed murder charges against Genesis Penn, who was 30 years old at the time the charges were announced. Witnesses reportedly identified Penn as the shooter, telling investigators that Penn, a known drug dealer in the area, believed Buckhalter had stolen marijuana from him. At the time the charges were filed, Penn was already incarcerated in federal prison on unrelated charges. He was subsequently brought to Marion County in early 2024 to face the murder charge for the death of Christopher Buckhalter. Penn is being held without bond at the Marion County Jail while awaiting trial.
