In the early morning hours of February 25, 2025, a tragic event unfolded on the near east side of Indianapolis that ended the life of 28-year-old Cruize Hodge. A male, Hodge was discovered lying in the 400 block of Oakland Avenue, suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency services were dispatched to the scene just before 5:45 a.m., and he was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
Despite the efforts of medical professionals, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting led Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department detectives to quickly identify two suspects. Through a combination of evidence from the scene, video surveillance footage, and witness statements, arrest warrants were issued. The first suspect, a 24-year-old man, was taken into custody by the IMPD Violent Crimes Unit on March 6. Two days later, on March 8, the second suspect, a 29-year-old man, was apprehended during a traffic stop when an officer noticed the moped he was driving did not have a license plate.
Further details emerged from court documents, which painted a grim picture of Hodge's final moments. Witnesses alleged that two men, Michael Cantrail and Jaden Morland, who were reportedly friends of Hodge, had confronted him in a garage. They are accused of brandishing firearms, pinning Hodge against a wall, and robbing him of his possessions. The confrontation escalated to a physical assault, with the suspects allegedly pistol-whipping Hodge before leading him down a driveway and into the street. It was there that witnesses reported hearing gunshots. When they went to investigate, they found Hodge on the ground, bleeding and coughing up blood. The two men had fled the scene. Cell phone data reportedly placed both Cantrail and Morland in the vicinity of the crime that morning. Both men were subsequently arrested and held without bond, facing charges for their alleged roles in the murder.
