In a tragic turn of events on a summer evening in Indianapolis, a dispute at a gas station escalated to a fatal shooting, claiming the life of 32-year-old Desmond Banks. The male victim's life was cut short on June 9, 2022, following a seemingly minor incident in a parking lot on the city's east side. The encounter began when an ice cream truck, driven by Darius Butts, struck Banks' Chevrolet Camaro while attempting to maneuver around it.

What started as a common traffic incident quickly spiraled into a deadly confrontation. Security footage from the gas station captured the moments leading up to the shooting. After hitting the Camaro, Butts initially appeared to assess the damage before trying to leave the scene. Onlookers and Banks gestured for him to stop. Following a conversation between the two men, Butts produced a handgun and shot Banks multiple times. Butts then fled the scene in his ice cream truck.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to a report of a person shot around 11 p.m. in the 9900 block of East 38th Street and found Banks next to his car. Medics pronounced him dead at the scene. In a surprising development, Butts later returned to the scene and admitted to the police that he was the shooter, reportedly stating, 'Yeah, I did it. I smoked him.'

Darius Butts, 43, was arrested and charged with the murder of Desmond Banks. In August 2025, a jury found him guilty of murder. The following month, he was sentenced to 63 years in prison for his actions. Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears commented on the senselessness of the violence, noting that the incident stemmed from a situation that should have been a constructive conversation but instead ended in a tragic loss of life.
