In the early summer of 2018, the community of Indianapolis, Indiana, was shaken by the violent loss of one of its young residents, a Black man named Montel L. Robinson. Known affectionately to his friends and loved ones as 'Smokey,' Robinson was 24 years old and had built a life for himself in the city, working as a dietary aide at Arlington Place.
He was celebrated by those who knew him for his hard work, his jovial spirit, and the deep love he held for his family, including his young son, Jordan.
The tragedy unfolded on July 1, 2018, when officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched to the northeast side of the city. Responding to reports of a shooting in the 5600 block of Brendon Way Parkway, law enforcement arrived to find Robinson suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite the immediate response and medical attention, the injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead at the scene, leaving his parents, George Sweeney and Melissa Robinson, and his extended family in mourning.
In the wake of the shooting, homicide detectives and federal authorities launched a rigorous investigation to identify the person responsible for the slaying. Their efforts culminated in a significant break in the case when the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, working in conjunction with the U.S. Marshals Task Force, apprehended a suspect. Steven Gaston, who was 23 years old at the time, was taken into custody and faced a preliminary charge of murder for his alleged role in the shooting that ended Montel Robinson's life.
