In the early morning hours of January 8, 2022, the life of 17-year-old Jamal Lewis was tragically cut short on the near northwest side of Indianapolis. Just before 1 a.m., police were called to the 3100 block of Bonham Drive, a residential street not far from Cardinal Ritter High School, following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, officers discovered a young man outside who had sustained apparent gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical personnel pronounced the male, later identified
as Jamal Lewis, dead at the scene. The Marion County Coroner's Office would later confirm that the cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds, and his death was officially ruled a homicide. At the time, his killing marked the eighth homicide in Marion County just eight days into the new year.
In the immediate aftermath, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department opened an investigation into the fatal shooting. Detectives canvassed the area for evidence and sought information from the public, urging anyone with knowledge of the incident to come forward. Despite their efforts and public appeals for information, details regarding a motive or potential suspects have not been publicly released.
