In the summer of 2017, a young life was tragically cut short in Indianapolis, Indiana. Mykah Maverick Jackson, a 9-year-old Black / African American male, died on June 26, 2017, from a gunshot wound. The incident occurred on the northwest side of the city, in the 7100 block of Warrior Trail at The Flat apartment complex. That evening, what began as childhood play took a devastating turn when Mykah was shot in the face.
According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, the
shooting was a tragic accident. Mykah and another child were playing with a firearm that had not been properly secured. The gun belonged to a 27-year-old man who was related to the other child involved in the incident. In the immediate aftermath, family members rushed Mykah to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal.
In the days following the tragic event, the father of the other child, identified as P.L. Gage, turned himself in to the authorities. Following an investigation into the circumstances that led to Mykah's death, the Marion County prosecutor's office filed charges against Gage. He faced two felony counts of neglect in connection with the fatal shooting. The incident prompted public statements from law enforcement officials, including the IMPD Chief, who stressed the critical importance of responsible gun ownership and the devastating consequences of unsecured firearms in homes with children.
