Jayden Jaquan Sanders, a 19-year-old man, was fatally shot late on September 9, 2026, while riding in the back seat of an Uber on Indianapolis' far east side. The shooting unfolded near South Mitthoefer Road and Bucktail Boulevard, in the area of the Trails at Grassy Creek neighborhood. The rideshare driver had reportedly picked Sanders up from a residence in the neighborhood and was waiting to pull out toward Mitthoefer Road when another vehicle approached and someone inside opened fire.
The attack was sudden and concentrated on the passenger area of the Uber. The rear window was shattered, and investigators found roughly a dozen bullet holes in the rear door and passenger side of the vehicle. The driver was not struck. According to accounts of the shooting, Sanders told the driver that he had been hit as the other vehicle fled the area. The driver got out of the damaged car and called for emergency assistance.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police officers were dispatched to the area shortly before 11 p.m. and found Sanders suffering from gunshot injuries. Indianapolis Emergency Medical Services transported him to a hospital, where he was initially described as being in critical but stable condition. His condition deteriorated, and he died from his injuries after reaching the hospital. Reports indicate his death occurred within hours of the late-night shooting.
Investigators later said they believed Sanders had been specifically targeted rather than struck during a random shooting. Police have not publicly explained what led them to that conclusion, and the circumstances that placed Sanders in the gunman's sights have not been disclosed. The vehicle from which the shots were fired had not been publicly identified, and investigators were still trying to determine who was inside it and what events preceded the attack.
Detective James Hurt of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Office was assigned to the investigation. Police appealed to witnesses and anyone with information about the other vehicle, the shooter, or events surrounding Sanders' killing to contact investigators or provide an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers. As of the most recent publicly available reporting, no suspect had been publicly named, no arrest had been announced, and no criminal charges, trial proceedings, or convictions had been reported in connection with Sanders' death. The homicide remained under investigation.
