During the confrontation, the suspect fired the weapon, striking Jonathan, who was seated in the back seat. His friends rushed him to a nearby hospital, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, Jonathan's family sought answers, expressing confusion over the circumstances leading to his death. His mother, Viena Heredia, questioned why her son and his friends were in that particular area and appealed to his companions for more information, hoping to understand the events that led to the fatal encounter. The investigation took a significant turn when, in March 2023, San Antonio police arrested 17-year-old Ray Espinosa in connection with Jonathan's death. Espinosa was charged with capital murder. Authorities alleged that Espinosa had orchestrated a drug deal with the intent to rob the group of teens. When Jonathan and his friends arrived at the meeting spot, Espinosa allegedly drew a gun and ordered them out of the car. Jonathan reportedly resisted and attempted to disarm Espinosa, leading to the fatal shooting. At the time of the charge, Espinosa was already in custody for an unrelated incident.
Jonathan's death not only devastated his family but also highlighted the dangers of violent crime among youth in San Antonio. His family initiated efforts to honor his memory, including raising funds to build a memorial at Pearsall Park, a place where Jonathan frequently skateboarded.
