On the night of Wednesday, May 17, 2023, a violent incident occurred in the Forest Manor neighborhood of Indianapolis, Indiana, claiming the life of a young man. Deante Lamar McKinzie, a 23-year-old male, arrived at a local hospital suffering from gunshot wounds sustained during a shooting. Despite receiving medical attention, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the medical facility.
Following the victim's death, homicide detectives with the Indianapolis Metropolitan
Police Department launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting. Officers were able to trace the violence back to a residence near the intersection of East 38th Street and North Sherman Drive on the city's northeast side. It was determined that the altercation had taken place at this location before McKinzie made his way to the hospital.
Two days later, on Friday, May 19, 2023, authorities announced a breakthrough in the case. Police arrested 23-year-old Cynthia Lewis in connection with McKinzie's death. She was taken into custody and faced a preliminary charge of murder for her alleged role in the shooting. The investigation indicated that the suspect and the victim were known to each other, and the arrest was made after detectives established probable cause linking her to the crime scene on East 38th Street.
