On the evening of May 17, 2023, 23-year-old Deante Lamar McKinzie was fatally shot on Indianapolis's northeast side. At approximately 10 p.m., officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) responded to the 3400 block of East 38th Street after reports of a disturbance. Before their arrival, McKinzie had been transported by private vehicle to Community East Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
