In the winter of 2023, the life of John Randolph Bonilla Jr., a 44-year-old Hispanic/Latino male, was tragically cut short in Indianapolis, Indiana. On the morning of December 14th, police were called to a room he was renting in the 2200 block of North Illinois Street following a report of a person down. Upon arrival before 11 a.m., they discovered Mr. Bonilla with evident trauma.
Medics pronounced him dead at the scene.
The following day, the Marion County Coroner's Office confirmed the cause of death as gunshot wounds, specifically a shot to the head, and officially ruled his death a homicide. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department began an ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding his murder. Described by his sister, Appolonia, as a loving and giving man who was always willing to help others, his violent death left his family grappling with immense grief, compounded by the recent losses of their mother in a hit-and-run and their father shortly after from what she described as a broken heart.
As of the current date, no arrests have been made in connection with John Bonilla Jr.'s murder, and police have not publicly named any suspects. However, his sister believes the person responsible was likely someone he knew. She has suggested two potential avenues for investigators, mentioning a former tenant of a building he managed who had allegedly been making threats over a dispute involving a damaged apartment and a security deposit. She also spoke of a woman with whom he had a tumultuous relationship, who had reportedly threatened and physically harmed him in the past. The family continues to seek answers in the unresolved case.
