In the early morning hours of October 5, 2022, the life of 37-year-old Robert McCullum Jr. was tragically cut short in a shooting on the north side of Indianapolis. The incident occurred shortly after 2:30 a.m. in the 2200 block of East 38th Street. Officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responded to reports of a person shot and discovered McCullum in the parking lot of an apartment complex, suffering from what would prove to be fatal gunshot wounds.
Despite the immediate medical attention, he was pronounced dead at the scene. He was a Black/African American male.
The night McCullum was killed was a particularly violent one in the city, with multiple shootings occurring within hours of each other. In fact, another man was found shot just a half-mile away at a gas station around the same time. Authorities believed the two incidents were connected, though the other man was reported to be in stable condition. The Marion County Coroner's Office later officially identified McCullum as the deceased victim.
In the wake of the shooting, homicide detectives began an immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding McCullum's death. However, the case has remained unsolved. To date, no arrests have been made in connection with the homicide, and police have not publicly identified any suspects or a potential motive for the shooting. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward to assist in bringing a resolution to the case and providing answers for McCullum's family and friends.
