In a tragic turn of events on April 24, 2022, 74-year-old Mark McIntire, a male resident of Indianapolis, Indiana, was killed in a violent incident on the far west side of the city. The series of events began when officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched to a residence on Countryside Drive following a disturbance call.
Upon their arrival, they were confronted by an armed man, later identified as 81-year-old Dean Farmer.
Farmer quickly retreated into the house and began firing shots, forcing the officers to take cover and call for the assistance of the SWAT team. For nearly five hours, authorities attempted to negotiate with Farmer to no avail.
Around 7 p.m., the SWAT team made entry into the home. Inside, they discovered the bodies of Mark McIntire, a 70-year-old woman named Janet McIntire, and Dean Farmer. All three had sustained gunshot wounds. The Marion County Coroner's Office subsequently ruled the deaths of both Mark and Janet McIntire as homicides.
The investigation into the incident revealed that Dean Farmer had shot and killed both Mark and Janet McIntire before taking his own life as law enforcement surrounded the residence. While the investigation determined the sequence of events, the motive behind Farmer's actions remains unclear. The case was investigated by the IMPD's Critical Incident Response Team.
