In the fall of 2022, a tragic and unforeseen act of violence cut short the life of Maxine Angelica Congress, a 23-year-old Black / African American woman from Indianapolis, Indiana. On the evening of November 1, 2022, Maxine was found with a gunshot wound in the vicinity of East 40th Street and North Emerson Avenue. Despite immediate medical attention and being rushed to a nearby hospital, she succumbed to her injuries.
The investigation into her death revealed a complex and volatile
situation rooted in a domestic dispute. It was determined that Maxine was not the intended target of the fatal shot. She had been accompanying a friend, who was the ex-girlfriend of a man, to confront his new girlfriend. The situation escalated, and gunfire erupted. Maxine, who was in a car at the scene, was tragically struck by a bullet intended for someone else.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the investigation led to the arrest of a man, but he was later released as the evidence presented did not meet the necessary burden of proof for criminal charges. Subsequently, a 23-year-old woman, Linsey Sharae Rose, was arrested and charged with murder in connection with Maxine's death. Court documents indicated that Rose admitted to firing the weapon that killed Maxine. The incident was further complicated by the fact that it was witnessed by Rose's two young children.
The case was marked by conflicting accounts of the events, with the man initially arrested and his girlfriend reportedly blaming each other for the shooting.
