Amarjit Sekhon, a 48-year-old female of the Sikh faith, was a dedicated mother of two sons and the primary provider for her family. She had been working at a FedEx facility in Indianapolis since November of 2020 to support her family, including her husband who was unable to work due to a disability. Described as a 'workaholic' by her brother-in-law, she was known for her relentless work ethic, always seeking out extra shifts to provide for her loved ones.
Even after receiving a COVID-19 vaccine and feeling unwell, she still went to work.
On the evening of April 15, 2021, a former employee of the FedEx facility, 19-year-old Brandon Scott Hole, carried out a mass shooting at the workplace. Hole, armed with two legally purchased AR-15 style rifles, began firing indiscriminately at employees in the parking lot before moving towards the building. The attack was brief, lasting only a few minutes, during which Amarjit Sekhon and seven other individuals were fatally shot. Hole then took his own life at the scene. It is believed that Sekhon and a relative, Jasvinder Kaur, who she drove to work each day, were shot and killed together in her car in the parking lot as they arrived for their 11 p.m. shift.
The investigation into the shooting revealed that the perpetrator had a history of mental health issues, including behavioral disorders and a previous incident in March 2020 where his mother had warned law enforcement of his potential for 'suicide by cop.' Although a shotgun was seized from him at that time, he was still able to legally purchase the rifles used in the attack. The FBI later concluded that the shooting was an act of 'suicidal murder' intended to 'demonstrate his masculinity and capability while fulfilling a final desire to experience killing people.' As the sole perpetrator died at the scene, there were no arrests or subsequent trials. The incident deeply impacted the local Sikh community, as a large percentage of the facility's employees were members of this community, and four of the eight victims were Sikh.
