In the summer of 2016, family members grew worried when they couldn't reach 20-year-old Netria Lyons for several days. Their concern turned to tragedy on June 28th when she was discovered deceased inside her apartment in the 6300 block of Mission Terrace on the northwest side of Indianapolis. Investigators determined that the young woman had been shot multiple times.
Friends and family were left reeling, describing Lyons as a hardworking and well-liked individual who was a student and held two jobs. Her grandmother recalled their last time together, shopping for a party Netria had planned for the previous Saturday. She had promised to take her grandmother to church that Sunday, a promise she was tragically unable to keep.
The investigation into the death of the young female led Indianapolis Metro Police to a suspect two months later. On August 29, 2016, authorities arrested 35-year-old Aaron Staton of Indianapolis in connection with the killing. It was revealed that Staton was Lyons' boyfriend, and the two had met while working together at Amazon. The victim's family described her as a bright young woman who was preparing to start classes at Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis.
Following his arrest, Aaron Staton was charged with murder and carrying a handgun without a license. He was held in custody without bond. At his initial court appearance, it was stated that if convicted, he could face a sentence of up to 65 years in prison. His trial was scheduled to begin on November 28, 2016.
