In the early hours of March 14, 2024, the life of 31-year-old Candace Patrice Powell was tragically cut short in Indianapolis. Believed to be a mother of four, her death left a void in the lives of her family and friends. The incident unfolded in the parking lot of a Marathon gas station located in the 1400 block of Prospect Street, near Spruce Street. Following what investigators believe was a disturbance, Powell was shot.
She was then driven in her own vehicle to Methodist Hospital, where she was pronounced dead from her injuries. The individual who dropped her off at the hospital has not been publicly identified.
As the investigation progressed, detectives with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department identified a suspect in the fatal shooting. An arrest warrant was issued for 34-year-old Deandre Rogers of Indianapolis. He is facing charges of murder, unlawful possession of a firearm by a domestic batterer, and unlawful carrying of a handgun with a prior felony conviction. Rogers was reportedly Powell's boyfriend, and court documents revealed a history of domestic violence, including a prior threat by Rogers to kill her.
Deandre Rogers remains a fugitive from justice and is considered armed and dangerous. Authorities have indicated that he has connections to Houston, Texas, and Atlanta, Georgia, broadening the search for him beyond Indianapolis. As of early 2025, his murder case in Indiana's court records database shows a warrant flag with no new filings since May of 2024, indicating that he has not yet been apprehended to face the charges against him. The search for Rogers continues as Candace Powell's family awaits justice.
