Angela Summers, a 45-year-old United States Postal Service mail carrier, was shot and killed on her route in an east Indianapolis neighborhood on April 27, 2020. A mother to a 14-year-old daughter, Summers was a dedicated employee who had been with the postal service for less than two years and also served as a union steward. In the days leading up to her death, she had expressed concerns on social media about an aggressive Chihuahua at a residence on North Denny Street, noting that she had
been forced to use her mail carrier spray on the dog on two separate occasions due to its aggressive behavior.
The conflict escalated over the suspension of mail delivery to the dog's residence. Tony Cushingberry-Mays, a 21-year-old resident of the home, was reportedly upset that the mail service had been stopped and believed a stimulus check was being withheld. On the afternoon of her death, Cushingberry-Mays confronted Summers on a neighbor's porch, demanding his mail. The confrontation grew heated, and after Summers reportedly used her mace on him, Cushingberry-Mays drew a handgun and shot her in the chest at point-blank range. A neighbor heard the gunshot and found Summers on her porch, bleeding. She was rushed to a local hospital where she later died.
Following the shooting, Cushingberry-Mays fled the scene and hid the firearm in a nearby garage. An investigation involving the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, and the FBI led to his arrest the following day. Authorities found ammunition in his home that matched the weapon used in the shooting. Cushingberry-Mays was charged with second-degree murder, assaulting a federal employee, and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence. He later pleaded guilty to murder and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence. In June 2023, Tony Cushingberry was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison for the murder of Angela Summers.
