In the cold of an Indianapolis winter, the life of 14-year-old Deandra Clay-Staples, an African American female, was tragically cut short. On the morning of Saturday, January 11, 2025, police were called to the Laurelwood Apartments on the south side of the city, in what was typically considered a quieter neighborhood. There, in the 1400 block of Salisbury Lane, they discovered Deandra's body in the snow. She had been shot and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The last time her family had seen her was the previous evening when she left her home with a group of other young people.
Known affectionately as 'Moo Moo' to her loved ones, Deandra was a freshman at Warren Central High School. She was described as a joyful and energetic teenager with a bright personality who was deeply loved by her family. A passionate and dedicated member of the G3 Steppers dance team since she was 11, she was known for her powerful presence and loud voice that belied her small stature. Her coach and teammates remembered her as 'small but mighty,' a leader who always gave 110 percent.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is investigating Deandra's death as a homicide, but as of now, no arrests have been made and no suspects have been publicly identified. Her family and the wider community are reeling from the senseless act of violence. In the days following her death, family and friends gathered at the spot where her body was found to hold a vigil and release pink, purple, and blue balloons in her memory. Her dance team also came together to honor her, sharing memories and offering support to one another during a prayer service and balloon release.
Deandra's family has made emotional pleas for justice, begging for anyone with information to come forward and do the right thing. They are left grappling with the heartbreaking question of how someone could be so cruel as to take the life of a child and leave her in the snow. Amid their grief, there are rumors that she may have been set up by people she considered friends.
