A holiday gathering of family and friends on Christmas Day turned into a scene of tragedy in an Indianapolis neighborhood. Inside a home in the 6400 block of Meadowlark Drive, a disturbance escalated, leading to a fatal shooting that claimed the life of 37-year-old Ana Paredes, a female, and injured five other adults. The incident occurred shortly before 12:30 p.m. in the Devington neighborhood, while four children, all under the age of 18, were also present in the house.
They were found unharmed in the front living room by responding officers.
When the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department arrived, they discovered a chaotic situation. One woman was found shot outside the house, while a man and a woman, later identified as Paredes, were suffering from gunshot wounds in a back room. Paredes was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead. In the hours that followed the shooting, the number of victims grew as three other men who had been shot at the party separately sought treatment at area hospitals, one of whom was in critical condition. The other five individuals who were shot were expected to survive their injuries.
Following the shooting, police received a detailed description of the suspect and began a search of the area. Officers soon located a man matching the description hiding in some nearby bushes. The individual, identified as 35-year-old Dauzon Narvez Garzon, was taken into custody. He had minor lacerations and was treated at a hospital before being arrested on a preliminary charge of murder.
Investigators believe the shooting stemmed from a disturbance among the family and friends who had gathered for the holiday. A gun was recovered from inside the home. Subsequently, Dauzon Garzon was formally charged with one count of murder and five counts of battery by means of a deadly weapon for his alleged role in the violence that shattered the Christmas celebration.
