In the early hours of April 27, 2024, the life of 50-year-old Shanica Mills, a Black female, was tragically cut short in her Indianapolis, Indiana, home. Police responded to a report of a person shot in the 4300 block of Hovenweep Way, on the city's east side, at approximately 1 a.m. Upon arrival, officers discovered Mills inside her residence suffering from gunshot wounds.
Despite the efforts of emergency medical personnel, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators believe the gunshots that killed Mills were fired from outside of her house. At the time of the fatal shooting, another family member was present in the home but was not injured in the incident. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is actively investigating the homicide.
Shanica was a devoted mother to her four children. Born in Austin, Texas, she was a graduate of Stephen Decatur High School and had earned a Certified Nursing Assistant Certificate from Richland Community College. For nearly three decades, she had a productive career with National Government Services. She was an active member of her church and was known for her contagious smile and her love for family, photography, travel, and cooking.
As of late 2025, no suspects have been identified or arrested in connection with the murder of Shanica Mills. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities urge anyone with information to come forward.
