In the Rainier Beach neighborhood of Seattle, a tragic story unfolded on the afternoon of January 30, 2026, forever altering the lives of many. Traveiah Houfmuse, a 17-year-old male student at Rainier Beach High School, was at a bus stop on South Henderson Street at Rainier Avenue South shortly after school let out for the day. In an instant, the normal sounds of an afternoon were shattered by gunfire, and in the aftermath, Traveiah and another student lay fatally wounded.
First
responders arrived at the scene near the high school just before 4:00 p.m. to find two young men with gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of police and the Seattle Fire Department, both Traveiah and the other student, later identified as 18-year-old Malik Stewart, were pronounced deceased at the scene. The King County Medical Examiner's Office would later confirm that Traveiah Houfmuse died from multiple gunshot wounds, ruling his death a homicide. Both he and Malik were students at Rainier Beach High School, a fact confirmed by the school's principal in a message to the school community.
In the wake of the shooting, the Seattle Police Department launched a double homicide investigation. Detectives believe the shooting was targeted, though the circumstances that led to the tragic event are still under investigation. The suspect reportedly fled the area on foot immediately after the shooting, and despite a search by officers, has not been apprehended.
