In the autumn of 2022, on November 8th, emergency responders were called to the 3500 block of Blue Spruce Lane in Indianapolis, where they found 59-year-old Sherry Lynn Wolfe on the sidewalk with multiple gunshot wounds. A witness reported hearing an argument between Wolfe and a man, followed by her cries for help and then gunshots. Wolfe was transported to a local hospital in critical condition and succumbed to her injuries two days later, on November 10, 2022.
The coroner subsequently ruled her death a homicide.
The investigation quickly centered on 65-year-old Robert Reed Jr. as the suspect in what authorities believed to be a domestic dispute. A witness identified Reed as the shooter. The day after the shooting, on November 9, a family member of Reed's contacted the Lawrence Police Department, providing his location. With the assistance of the Lawrence Police Department, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit located and arrested Reed. During an interview with detectives, Reed confessed to shooting Wolfe during an argument.
Initially arrested on a preliminary charge of attempted murder before Wolfe's death, Robert Reed Jr. was later charged with murder. In October 2024, following a two-day trial, a jury found him guilty. In May 2025, Reed was sentenced to 55 years in prison for the murder of Sherry Lynn Wolfe. Prosecutors highlighted that Wolfe had been attempting to leave an unhealthy relationship just days before her life was taken over a minor argument.
