On the evening of April 17, 2012, Sharon Louise Toran, a 23-year-old female, was fatally shot in Indianapolis, Indiana. The incident occurred at approximately 10:20 p.m. in the 3700 block of Layman Avenue as she was getting her two young daughters out of her car. Her estranged husband, Miles Toran, who was 23 at the time, emerged from nearby bushes and opened fire.
Sharon's brother, 21-year-old Jonathan Perry, was also shot in the leg during the attack, but the two children were physically unharmed.
The couple had been married since 2008 and had separated the month prior to the shooting. In the days leading up to her death, Sharon had sought legal protection from her husband, filing a protective order just 16 days before she was killed. Miles Toran, who was on active duty in the Air Force and living in Virginia, had returned to Indianapolis for a scheduled custody hearing later that week.
Following the shooting, Miles Toran was taken into custody and subsequently charged with murder and attempted murder. Evidence presented during the legal proceedings included data retrieved from his smartphone, which showed he had accessed websites related to murder penalties and defending a murder charge on the day of the shooting. He was ultimately convicted of both charges. For the murder of his wife, he received a sentence of sixty-five years, and for the attempted murder of her brother, he was sentenced to thirty years, with the terms to be served concurrently for a total of sixty-five years. His appeal of the conviction and sentence was unsuccessful.
