Deputy Sheriff Joseph W. Sykes, aged 41, tragically lost his life on August 28, 1909, in Norfolk, Virginia. On that fateful day, Deputy Sykes, along with two special officers, encountered three suspicious men on Old County Road in the City of South Norfolk.
