In the summer of 2013, a violent altercation in a convenience store parking lot tragically cut short the life of a young man. Terrell Gerard Owens, a 29-year-old male from Hampton, Virginia, was shot and killed on June 11, 2013. The incident, which began as a physical fight, escalated quickly, leaving a community in shock and a family mourning an unexpected loss.
The events of that Tuesday afternoon unfolded in the parking lot of Roy's Quick Serve on Shell Road. According to a media release from the Hampton Police Division, multiple calls reporting shots fired were received around 1:08 p.m. When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Owens suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body. Despite the immediate response from Hampton Fire and Rescue, his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Investigators soon pieced together the moments leading up to the shooting. It was determined that a physical altercation had initiated inside a vehicle parked in front of the business. The conflict then spilled out into the parking lot, where it intensified. It was during this escalation that a firearm was produced, and Owens was fatally shot.
The subsequent investigation led to the identification of two suspects in connection with the homicide. Andre Marquis Monroe, a 29-year-old resident of Hampton, was arrested and faced a slew of charges, including one count of murder, one count of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and one count of possession of cocaine. A second suspect, 29-year-old Zachary Lamont Batts of Newport News, was also identified, and warrants were issued for his arrest on charges of murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
