In the early morning hours of July 16, 2023, a gathering outside a 7-Eleven on West Mercury Boulevard in Hampton, Virginia, turned deadly. Amidst a large and disorderly crowd, shots rang out, leaving 27-year-old Jahleel Angus, a male from Yorktown, with a fatal gunshot wound. Police responded to the scene at approximately 2:26 a.m. and found Angus, who was pronounced deceased by emergency medical personnel.
A second victim, a 29-year-old man from Newport News, was also shot and transported himself to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, which he ultimately survived.
The initial investigation revealed that the incident was not a random act of violence. The suspect had reportedly approached both Jahleel Angus and the other man within the crowd, opened fire on them, and then fled the scene on foot. For a time, the suspect's identity remained unknown as the Hampton Police Division's Major Crimes Unit worked to piece together the events of that chaotic morning, appealing to the public for any information that could lead to an arrest.
More than seven months after the shooting, a breakthrough in the case occurred. On February 27, 2024, authorities arrested 31-year-old Dwayne Demario Marrow of Newport News in connection with the homicide. Marrow was taken into custody without incident in the city of Newport News. He has since been charged with a litany of offenses, including one count of murder for the death of Jahleel Angus, one count of aggravated assault related to the second victim, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and two counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony.
