In the quiet evening of September 19, 2017, in Hampton, Virginia, the life of 49-year-old Colin Quentin Chappell was tragically cut short. Inside a residence on Ridgeway Avenue, Chappell was fatally shot. The incident prompted an investigation by the Hampton Police Division, which quickly led to a suspect.
Corey Divon Mitchener, a 31-year-old at the time, was arrested in connection with the shooting. The investigation culminated in several serious charges against Mitchener.
He was charged with one count of homicide, one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, one count of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and one count of discharging a firearm within an occupied dwelling. Following his arrest, Mitchener was taken into custody and held at the Hampton City Jail.
In a separate and unrelated incident in Hampton, another man with a similar name, Isaac Allen Chappell, also met a violent end. On the morning of January 16, 2019, Chappell was shot and killed in the parking lot of Roy's Quick Service II convenience store at the intersection of Shell Road and Bell Street. Just moments before the shooting, he had been inside the store and purchased a piece of candy.
The Hampton Police Division's investigation into this shooting identified 35-year-old Van Julian Overby III as the suspect. According to detectives, Overby and Chappell had an altercation in the parking lot, which escalated to Overby fatally shooting Chappell. With the assistance of the Newport News Police Department, Overby was located and arrested. He faced charges of murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. The shooting prompted temporary modified lockdowns at three nearby schools as a safety precaution.
