In the quiet community of Hampton, Virginia, the life of 70-year-old Donald Burrell, a Black/African American male, was brought to a tragic and violent end. On October 9, 2016, police were called to his home on Somerville Drive for a welfare check, where they discovered his body. An autopsy would later reveal that he had been shot between 13 and 15 times in the upper body.
The initial shock of the brutal slaying that rippled through the neighborhood would soon be compounded by the identity of the person arrested for the crime.
The investigation swiftly focused on a suspect surprisingly close to home: Donald Burrell's own son, 35-year-old Joel Aaron Burrell. Evidence gathered by detectives pointed to the younger Burrell, and he was taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
