In the early morning hours of August 2, 2013, the life of 21-year-old Jaquan Marquise Brown, a Black male from Hampton, Virginia, was cut short by gunfire. The incident unfolded in the vicinity of North King Street, where police responded to calls of shots fired just before 3 a.m. Upon their arrival, they discovered Brown in a grassy lot, suffering from at least one gunshot wound to his upper body.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Initial investigations by the Hampton Police Division painted a picture of a robbery gone tragically wrong. They reported that Brown was involved in an attempt to rob a woman who was walking in the area. In the moments immediately following this alleged attempted robbery, Brown was shot. In the immediate aftermath, police described the shooter as an 'unknown suspect' and appealed to the public for any information that could lead to an arrest, a plea that would be echoed for years to come as the case grew cold.
However, a more detailed and complex narrative emerged from a police affidavit filed in Hampton Circuit Court. According to this account, Brown was not the victim of an unknown assailant but was instead accidentally shot by his own accomplice. The affidavit states that as Brown and another individual attempted to rob the woman, two other people came to her aid.
