In the late hours of a January evening in Hampton, Virginia, the life of 25-year-old Kurtis Rashad Toombs, a Black male, was tragically cut short. On January 17, 2013, Toombs was a passenger in a Chevrolet Malibu, traveling with another man in the vicinity of the 200 block of South Back River Road, near Darling Stadium. It was then that gunshots shattered the night, and a bullet struck Toombs in the head.
Despite his grave injury, the driver of the vehicle, a 23-year-old man who had also
sustained non-life-threatening gunshot wounds, managed to drive them to the Sentara Careplex for help. Upon their arrival, two Black males carried Toombs into the hospital. He was quickly transferred to Riverside Hospital for more advanced care. However, the efforts to save his life were unsuccessful, and Kurtis Toombs was pronounced dead in the early morning hours of January 18, 2013. The other victim was treated for his injuries and subsequently released from the hospital.
The Hampton Police Division launched a homicide investigation into the shooting. Witnesses at the scene described a possible suspect as a tall Black male. As of late 2025, the motive for the shooting remained under investigation, and no arrests had been made in connection with the murder of Kurtis Toombs. Authorities have continued to ask for the public's assistance, encouraging anyone with information to come forward to help bring resolution to the case that has remained unsolved for over a decade.
