On a cold December evening in Newport News, Virginia, the life of 20-year-old Jamek Renal Herbert was tragically cut short. On December 10, 2013, Herbert was walking with another man on 33rd Street, between Madison and Marshall Avenues, not far from his own home. At approximately 10:45 p.m., the night was shattered by the sound of gunfire.
