In the early hours of August 8, 2023, the sound of gunfire shattered the quiet of a Newport News, Virginia neighborhood. When police responded to a call at 12:55 a.m. in the 400 block of Stallings Court, they discovered a grim scene inside a residence. Three men lay dead from gunshot wounds. One of the victims was identified as 36-year-old Derek Rico Jones, a male resident of Newport News.
The other two men were 61-year-old Alvin Eugene Holiday and 60-year-old Monroe McGilvary Jr., both from nearby Williamsburg. A woman who was also in the home was physically unharmed and had been the one to call 911.
The investigation into the triple homicide continued for months as detectives worked to piece together the events of that tragic night. The community was left searching for answers and mourning the loss of the three men. The case saw a significant development in April 2025 when authorities identified a suspect.
On April 16, 2025, U.S. Marshals, working in conjunction with the Newport News Police Department, located and arrested 26-year-old Dimair Jones in connection with the murders. He was taken into custody in the 400 block of Cox Landing after a tip led investigators to a hotel where he was staying. Following his arrest, Dimair Jones was charged with three counts of first-degree murder, three counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and discharging a firearm within a dwelling. He is currently being held at the Newport News City Jail awaiting his court appearance.
