On a late Sunday night in February 2014, the promising life of 20-year-old Kahron Michael Lee was tragically cut short near the Virginia Union University campus in Richmond. A sophomore majoring in Computer Information Systems, Lee was walking back to his apartment after a study session. He was a graduate of T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, where he had been a standout track and field athlete, excelling in the high jump. His athletic prowess had earned him a place on the Virginia Union track team, and he was remembered as a well-liked and active member of the campus community with aspirations of one day working for Google.
In an act of senseless violence, Kahron Lee was confronted by an individual who demanded his Nike Air Jordan shoes. As he tried to get away, he was shot in the back. The incident occurred around 11:50 p.m. at The Birches apartment complex located at the corner of West Graham Road and Langston Avenue. Following the shooting, several people were seen fleeing the area. The university community was left in shock and mourning, holding a prayer vigil to honor a young man who was described by those who knew him as a nice kid with a bright future. His family was devastated by the loss of their first-born child, who they remembered as a good kid who was not involved in any trouble.
The investigation into Kahron Lee's murder led to the arrest of 19-year-old Willie Daquan Lee of Richmond, who was not related to the victim. In June of that year, Willie Lee pleaded guilty to first-degree murder, robbery, and two felony firearms counts. The motive was confirmed to be the theft of Kahron's sneakers. In November 2014, he was sentenced to 44 years in prison for his crimes, bringing a measure of closure to a case that had deeply affected the Virginia Union University and Alexandria communities.
