In the early morning hours of March 17, 2022, the life of 35-year-old Derrell 'Shank' Turnage was tragically cut short in Richmond, Virginia. A Black/African American male, Turnage was discovered inside his parked car on West Brookland Park Boulevard after police responded to reports of random gunfire in the area around 2:32 a.m. He had sustained a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency personnel.
Described by his family as a good man with deep roots in the
Richmond community, his sudden and violent death sent ripples of shock and grief through his circle of loved ones and the neighborhood. The area where the incident occurred was noted by residents as a generally peaceful community, a place where children played and neighbors held block parties, making the shooting all the more unsettling for those who lived nearby.
In the wake of the discovery, the Richmond Police Department launched a homicide investigation into Turnage's death.
