On a Sunday morning, May 12, 2019, which happened to be Mother's Day, the life of 27-year-old Dwayne R. Reid was tragically cut short. Reid, a resident of Newport News, Virginia, was at the Chippenham Square Shopping Center on Midlothian Turnpike in Chesterfield County, a part of the greater Richmond area, when he was shot multiple times around 5:15 a.m.
Emergency services transported him to a local hospital, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led authorities to identify a suspect. Warrants were issued for 29-year-old Darren Damion Douglas of Richmond, who was initially charged with second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. A few days after the incident, Douglas turned himself in to the police. His charges were later upgraded to first-degree murder.
Further investigation revealed that another individual was involved in the fatal shooting. In August 2019, Chesterfield County detectives secured indictments against Rudane L. Graham for first-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Graham, described as a 6-foot-4, 280-pound Black male with black hair and brown eyes, remains at large. Authorities also announced they were seeking two other men for questioning, believing they possessed information pertinent to the case.
In March 2020, Darren Damion Douglas entered into a plea agreement. The charges of murder and firearm possession against him were dropped, and he was sentenced to 10 years in prison, with five years suspended, for conspiracy to commit murder. Following his release, Douglas will be subject to indefinite supervision. The search for Rudane L. Graham and the two other individuals sought for questioning continues as law enforcement and the community seek full justice for the death of Dwayne R. Reid.
