Andrew Jones, a 23-year-old man from Richmond, Virginia, was fatally shot on the night of August 15, 2026, during a large block party in the city’s Fairfield Court neighborhood. The shooting unfolded in the 2200 block of North 23rd Street, where a crowd had gathered near an apartment complex. Richmond Police officers were already in the vicinity of the block party when
they heard the shots at approximately 10:52 p.m. Officers moved toward the sound of the gunfire, approaching the rear of an apartment building. There they found Jones suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Police immediately began rendering first aid, called for additional emergency assistance and worked to secure the surrounding area as the situation remained dangerous and unsettled.
Jones was transported from the scene to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Despite efforts to save him, he died from his injuries later that night. Police publicly identified him two days later as a Richmond resident. Authorities said the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner would make the official determination regarding his cause and manner of death, while Richmond Police classified and investigated the incident as a homicide.
As officers were responding to Jones, they reportedly saw another adult man running near the scene while firing a weapon. Officers detained that individual without further incident. Police subsequently charged him with reckless handling of a firearm and discharging a firearm within Richmond city limits. Authorities emphasized, however, that those charges related to his alleged conduct with the firearm and that he had not been charged with killing Jones.
