On a tragic night in Richmond, Virginia, the life of 18-year-old Antonio M. Sherman was cut short. The young Black / African American man was at a house party on Westover Hills Boulevard on October 19, 2014, when an argument escalated into gunfire. Sherman was struck by a bullet in the left side of his back, a fatal wound from which he would not recover. The scene was chaotic, with approximately twenty-five people in attendance at the party, which featured a bar and dancers.
In the aftermath of the shooting, another man, 24-year-old Elijah D. Gee, was also found to have been killed, and a 19-year-old female was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, though she ultimately survived. Investigators at the scene recovered a nine-millimeter bullet, the same caliber that ended Sherman's life, as well as two. 40 caliber cartridge casings, indicating that multiple firearms had been discharged during the altercation.
The investigation into the double homicide led authorities to a suspect named Rashard Sanders Cutler. He was subsequently arrested and faced a trial for his alleged involvement in the deadly shooting. The legal proceedings concluded with Cutler's conviction on several serious charges, including second-degree murder, malicious wounding, and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Despite his defense team's argument that another individual could have been responsible for the shootings, the court found the evidence against Cutler to be compelling, and his conviction was upheld.
