In the early evening of October 12, 2021, a fatal encounter unfolded on a street in Henrico County, Virginia, that would end the life of 51-year-old Hassan Dixon. Dixon, a male, was inside his sedan near the intersection of Parkview Avenue and East Laburnum Avenue when he was approached by a man on a bicycle. An interaction between the two men escalated, resulting in shots being fired into Dixon's vehicle.
Despite being wounded, Dixon managed to drive away from the scene.
His car was later found at the intersection of Carolina Avenue and Meadowbridge Road in Richmond. However, by the time help reached him, he had succumbed to his injuries. The initial investigation began at the scene where Dixon's vehicle was discovered, but it was soon determined that the shooting had occurred in Henrico County, prompting their police department to take the lead in the homicide investigation.
Within a day of the shooting, Henrico Police made a swift arrest. Utilizing surveillance footage from the area, patrol officers were able to identify a suspect. Deontre L. Maryland, a 25-year-old from Richmond, was taken into custody without incident on the afternoon of October 13, 2021. Maryland was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. He was held without bond at the Henrico County Sheriff's Office.
