In the early hours of a Thursday morning in Richmond, Virginia, Reverend Anthony L. Bagby Jr., a 60-year-old Black male, was found deceased inside a vehicle. The discovery was made on May 16, 2024, in the 3600 block of Midlothian Turnpike. Emergency responders arrived at the scene to find that Bagby had sustained apparent gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead.
Known for his deep faith and dedication to his ministry, the death of the Henrico County resident sent ripples of grief through Richmond's Southside community.
Anthony, or 'Tony' as he was known to friends and family, was a beloved father, grandfather, and friend. His daughter, Niesha Henderson, remembered him for his sense of humor and a cherished tradition of singing 'Happy Birthday' in various languages. His wife, Tara Bagby, spoke of the profound loss, stating, 'You took away a father. You took away a grandfather. You took away a friend and most of all you took away 26 years of my life'. Bagby was not only a family man but also a pillar in his community, having established his own church in 2013 and being a devoted member of the local recovery community where he served as a sponsor and speaker.
The Richmond Police Department is actively investigating the shooting death of Reverend Bagby. As of now, authorities have not publicly identified any suspects or made any arrests in connection with the case. Investigators have reached out to the public for assistance, urging anyone with information to come forward and contact Major Crimes Detective B. Neifeld or Crime Stoppers. The family continues to hold out hope for justice and accountability for the person or persons responsible for their tragic loss.
