In what should have been a simple transaction, a young man's life was tragically cut short in a senseless act of violence. Joshua A. Grey, a 23-year-old Caucasian male, was shot and killed on September 17, 2018, in Richmond, Virginia. The aspiring model had arranged to sell his iPhone through the mobile marketplace app 'Letgo,' a decision that ultimately led him to a fatal encounter.
The agreed-upon meeting place was on Mechanicsville Turnpike.
It was there that Grey was shot during what authorities described as a botched robbery. After being wounded, he managed to run to a nearby convenience store, where he collapsed and succumbed to his injuries. The incident, which occurred on a day marked by a tornado outbreak in the area, left his family and community in shock and grief.
The investigation into Grey's murder led to the arrests of two teenagers, Tyshawn Andrews and Demeco Pressey-Robertson. Andrews, who was 15 years old at the time of the shooting, was identified as the triggerman. In a plea agreement with prosecutors, he admitted to pulling the trigger, though he claimed he was forced to do so by Pressey-Robertson. Andrews was sentenced to 25 years in prison, with 10 years suspended, resulting in an active sentence of 15 years.
Demeco Pressey-Robertson, considered the mastermind behind the robbery plot, faced a trial where he was acquitted of first-degree murder. However, he was found guilty of attempted robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery. For his role in the crime that led to Joshua Grey's death, Pressey-Robertson was sentenced to 20 years in prison. In the aftermath of this tragedy, Grey's family has advocated for the creation of safe exchange zones to prevent similar crimes from happening to others utilizing online marketplaces.
