In the early morning hours of May 2, 2016, the body of 23-year-old Devin Sir Wallace Lowery, a Black/African American male, was discovered lying face down on the pavement in the 4500 block of Shallowford Circle in Virginia Beach, Virginia. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The Virginia Beach Police Department's homicide unit immediately began an investigation into his death.
Lowery had recently relocated to Virginia Beach
with his fiancée, who was serving in the Navy. The investigation revealed that on the night of his murder, Lowery was involved in a drug transaction that turned fatal. He had arranged to sell marijuana to Jon'nathan Kiondre Miller, a 20-year-old from nearby Chesapeake. Miller, accompanied by two other individuals, attempted to use counterfeit money to make the purchase.
When Devin Lowery realized the currency was fake, he refused to complete the transaction. In response, Jon'nathan Miller produced a. 380-caliber handgun and shot Lowery three times, striking him in the chest, back, and above his left eye. Miller was subsequently identified as the primary suspect and arrested. He was charged with second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
In a jailhouse interview following his arrest, Miller initially denied his involvement in the murder. However, he later expressed remorse and offered an apology to Lowery's family. In November 2016, Jon'nathan Kiondre Miller pleaded guilty to the charges against him. He was sentenced to 43 years in prison, with 16 years and five months of the sentence suspended. This left him with a total of more than 27 years to serve behind bars for the murder of Devin Sir Wallace Lowery.
