On the evening of December 18, 2016, in Newport News, Virginia, 33-year-old Sean Tremayne Clinton was shot and killed. The incident occurred at approximately 6:15 p.m. in the 4600 block of Marshall Avenue. When police arrived at the scene, they discovered two men with gunshot wounds. Clinton had been shot in the chest and was pronounced dead at the scene.
A second victim, a 40-year-old man, was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
In the initial stages of the investigation, authorities sought the public's help in identifying two suspects. They were described as two Black men, one with a dark complexion and the other with a lighter complexion. The light-skinned male was believed to be in his late teens or early twenties and was seen wearing a blue camouflage jacket. The dark-skinned male was estimated to be around 18 years old. For more than two years, the case remained unsolved, with police continuing to seek information from the community.
A significant development in the case came in February 2019, when Newport News police announced an arrest in connection with the 2016 shooting. A 19-year-old male was taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder, malicious wounding, and two counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony. Because the individual was a juvenile at the time the crime was committed, his name and photograph were not publicly released by the authorities.
