On July 18, 2023, at approximately 5:21 a.m., 25-year-old Tyra Shanell Crosby was fatally shot in a residence on Porter Street in Charlotte, North Carolina. The homeowner, 51-year-old Stephanie Alexander, returned home to find Crosby, whom she did not know, inside with her husband. Alexander discovered Crosby's clothing on the sofa, which led to a confrontation. During the ensuing altercation, Alexander retrieved a firearm. Despite her husband's attempts to de-escalate the situation, a shot was fired through a bathroom door, striking Crosby and resulting in her death at the scene.
Following the incident, Alexander called 911 to report the shooting and remained at the scene until law enforcement arrived. She was subsequently arrested and initially charged with voluntary manslaughter. However, after further investigation, a Mecklenburg County Grand Jury indicted her on a second-degree murder charge. In December 2024, Alexander pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and was sentenced to a prison term ranging from 60 to 84 months.
The events leading up to the shooting revealed that Crosby had met Alexander's husband at a local gambling arcade and had accompanied him to his residence, unaware that he was married. Crosby's mother, Tanya Hoskins, contended that her daughter was lured to the home under false pretenses and was unaware of the domestic situation she was entering. Hoskins also provided investigators with an eight-minute voicemail recording, purportedly capturing her daughter's final moments, which she believes influenced the decision to upgrade the charges against Alexander.
The case has drawn significant attention, highlighting issues of domestic violence and the tragic consequences of confrontations arising from infidelity. Crosby's family continues to mourn her loss, seeking justice and accountability for the events that led to her untimely death.
