Investigations revealed that Brandy and James Cox had traveled from their home in Sutherlin, Virginia, to confront a man in Charlotte over allegations that he had sexually assaulted a teenage relative of theirs. The confrontation escalated, resulting in the fatal shooting of Brandy and the injury of James. Neighbors reported hearing a heated argument followed by gunshots.
